Newspapers which are expected to report within the limits of media ethics while informing and educating the public about electoral processes have been notorious for publishing untruth, half truth and distorted stories when covering electoral process in Nigeria. Thus, more often than not, news events which newspapers project do not agree with the public perception of the actual news events. This provoked the study of public perception of newspaper adherence to ethical principles in the reportage of electoral processes in south east Nigeria. The study was anchored on selectivity theory which argues that previous experiences and current disposition go a long way to determine how readers decode newspaper messages. The research adopted survey method of scientific enquiry, using a 15 -item questionnaire and interviews to elicit information from respondents. The study was guided by 5 research questions and 3 hypotheses. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. The findings indicated that the public showed concern about newspaper adherence to ethical principles

Psychopathy and Sadism in Edgar Alan Poe's The Cask of Amantillado and The Tell Tale Heart

Edgar Alan Poe’s short stories are well-known for heinous main characters, such as Montresor in The Cask of Amantillado, and an anonymous man in The Tell Tale Heart. This study applies descriptive qualitative method as the main characters’ deeds and utterances were gathered as the data. Psychoanalysis approach is also applied due to the aim of this study which is to analyze psychopathic and sadistic personalities of the main characters. As the results, psychopathy exists in both main characters’ behavior and well-organized plans, simultaneously sadism from the way they end their victims’ lives for pleasure.

Edgar Allan Poe was in many ways the most versatile 19th century author to analyze the human mind and heart unabashedly, in order to obtain a complex portrait of Man. Vengeance often shows up in Poe’s work: whether it’s a character’s sentence within a non-violent and non-vengeful context or an entire tale totally based on someone’s retribution, the author’s bibliography is full of peculiar cases that deserve to be closely analyzed. Poe is actually one of the few writers able to mould a complex theme such as vengeance adapting it to his creativity and giving birth to different kinds of ‘punishments’, far from each other but all leading to one basic theme, the main subject of this thesis.

THE FIGURE OF THE TRICKSTER IN POE'S " HOP FROG " AND " THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO "

The figure of the trickster has been recurrently present throughout literature. The trickster is a major mythological archetype present in the collective unconscious. The role the trickster plays varies- ranging from villain to hero or a mixture of both. Poe relied on the trickster topic to construct many of his characters. By appropriating trickster features and imagery, Poe added the popular mythological archetype to his tales of horror. This ensured qualities of both grotesque comedy and classic tragedy to his tales. This paper examines the figure of the trickster in the short stories “Hop Frog” and the “The Cask of Amontillado”. The figure of the trickster is represented by the main characters Hop Frog, from the eponymous tale, and both characters from the second text. Through contrast and comparison, I show how Hop Frog and the characters from “The Cask of Amontillado” reproduce the archetype of the trickster. The character’s trickster identities provides evidence to analyze how their trickster-like roles shape the short stories and defines them as a blend of comedy and tragedy.
