Abstract

The objective of this article is to present a summary of research carried out for some years, which culminated in the publication of the book Bandeira Negra: rediscutindo o anarquismo [Black Flag: Rediscussing Anarchism].1 As part of a collective process of global research on anarchism, developed by researchers from different parts of the world within the Institute for Anarchist Theory and History (IATH), this book has a general objective: to answer the following question in depth, what is anarchism?

Anarchism is by far the least broadly understood ideology and the least studied academically. Though highly influential, both historically and in terms of recent social movements, anarchism is regularly dismissed. Anarchism: A Conceptual Approach is a welcome addition to this growing field, which is widely debated but poorly understood. Occupying a distinctive position in the study of anarchist ideology, this volumeauthored by a handpicked group of established and rising scholarsinvestigates how anarchists often seek to sharpen their message and struggle to determine what ideas and actions are central to their identity. Anarchism, Power, Class and Social Change

This article by Brazilian anarchist Felipe Corrêa discusses the relationship of anarchism with power, class, and revolutionary social change. Starting from a definition of anarchism it proposes to conceptualize power in terms of asymmetric, or uneven, relationships between social forces. It also puts forward that anarchists have a conception of power based on the belief in the capacity of the dominated classes as a social force, the defense of a revolutionary process, and replacing the dominating power of capitalist society with a self-managed power. Translation by Servio G. Felipe Corrêa is a teacher and political militant in São Paulo, Brazil. He is a participant with the Institute of Theory and Anarchist History (ITHA) and Coordenação Anarquista Brasileira or Brazilian Anarchist Coordination. The discussion below is a lightly edited transcription of a talk given by the author at the Ay Carmela, Rua das Carmelitas, in São Paulo, Brazil, on 2 November 2010. This article provides a global perspective on the history and theory of anarchism and syndicalism, arguing against views that treat anarchism as simple ‘anti-statism’ or a natural human ‘impulse’, in favour of the argument that the current is a socialist, working class tradition dating to the International Workingmen’s Association (the ‘First International’), 1864-1877. An international movement in intent, conception and membership from the start, it drew on a range of modernist, rationalist socialist ideas, and developed a powerful base in many regions of the world by the 1940s. Spanish anarchism was undoubtedly important, as was the anarchist Spanish Revolution of 1936–1939, but Spain provided but one of a series of mass-based, influential anarchist and syndicalist movements. Barcelona was only one in a chain of red-and-black anarchist and syndicalist strongholds, and the Spanish Revolution only one of a number of major rebellions, revolutionary rehearsals and actual social revolutions in which anarchism/ syndicalism played a decisive role. Although public attention was drawn by the spectacular actions of the movement’s marginal ‘insurrectionist’ wing, it was the ‘mass’ anarchist approach – based on patient mass organising and education – that predominated. The movement’s immersion in mass movements – especially through syndicalism, peasant and civil rights struggles, fights against racism and women’s oppression, and anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles – can also only be properly appreciated from a global perspective – one in which the movement’s rich history in the colonial and postcolonial world is placed centre-stage. The real history of the movement should not be confused with the mythological, propagandistic history of anarchism that sections of the movement subsequently promoted, centred on claims that ‘anarchism’ existed across all human history, was ‘natural’ etc.

Part I recognizes diversity of thinking appropriately by offeri several contrasting perspectives on anarchism. We open with Joh P. Clark's effort at definition. He discerns a theme common to all varieties of anarchist thought. "In both social and individualist anarchism. .. the view prevails that people have a great potential for voluntaristic action, and ability to overcome the use of violence and coercion." Of particular concern to Clark is that a definition take account of historical movements as well as theoretical formula tions. By considering both theory and practice, he says, the error of treating anarchist doctrines as inherently unrealistic and Utopian is avoided. "The distinctive characteristic of anarchist programs is that they institute an immediate movement in the direction of voluntarism and antiauthoritarianism." Central to Clark's defini tional analysis, then, is the idea that anarchism is just as much a call to action as it is a critique of the established order. In the next chapter, James M. Non-anarchist Anarchisms and Anarchisms of Non-anarchist Origin in Contemporary Political Thought

In contemporary political thought there are currents that have references to the term ‘anarchism’ in their names. These are: anarcho-primitivism, anarcho-transhumanism, and crypto-anarchism. The author formulated a hypothesis according to which the mentioned currents of political thought are currents of anarchism in so far as the idea of freedom is a primary value in them, and they are not currents of anarchism if freedom is treated in them as a consequence of the primordiality of other values or as a consequence of the processes of transformations taking place in the modern world and in the past. In order to verify this hypothesis, the author used the analysis of source texts, which made it possible to identify the analysed currents of political thought in the context of validity, superiority or inferiority of the idea of freedom in them, as well as the premises of its presence in these currents.

Anarchism and Political Theory: Contemporary Problems

This thesis explores contemporary anarchism, in its re-emergence as a social movement and political theory over the past decade. Its method combines cultural sociology and philosophical argumentation, in a participatory research framework. The first part, “Explaining Anarchism”, argues that it should be addressed primarily as a political culture, with distinct forms of organisation, of campaigning and direct action repertoires, and of political discourse and ideology. Largely discontinuous with the historical workers’ and peasants’ anarchist movement, contemporary anarchism has fused in the intersection of radical direct-action movements in the North since the 1960s: feminism, ecology, and the resistance to nuclear energy and weapons, war, and neoliberal globalisation. Anarchist ideological discourse is analysed with attention to key concepts such as “domination” and “prefigurative politics”, emphasising the avowedly open-ended, experimental nature of the anarchist project. The second part, “Anarchist Anxieties”, is a set of theoretical interventions in four major topics of controversy in anarchism today. Leadership in anarchist politics is addressed through sustained attention to the concept of power, proposing an agenda for equalising access to influence among activists, and an “ethic of solidarity” around the wielding of non-coercive power. Violence is approached through a recipient-based definition of the concept, exploring the limits of any attempt to justify violence and offering observations on violent empowerment, revenge and armed struggle. Technology is subject to a strong anarchist critique, which stresses its inherently social nature, leading to the exploration of Luddism, the disillusioned use of ICTs, and the promotion of lo-tech, sustainable human-nature interfaces as strategical directions for an anarchist politics of technology. Finally, the lens of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is used to address anarchist dilemmas around national liberation, exploring anarchist responses in conflict-ridden societies, and direct action approaches to peacemaking.

A “New” Anarchism? – On Bifurcation and Transformation of Contemporary Anarchist Thought and Praxis

The article reflects main discrepancies between basic coordinates of classic anarchist thought and coordinates of contemporary anarchism, as it developed within the “post-Seattle” alter-globalization movement. The article ascertains that the anarchist renaissance within the alter-globalization movement is not fostered only by classical anarchism, but also by ideational currents that in the past had represented its main counterpoint. The question that the author addresses is therefore: Is it possible to talk about a “new” anarchism? Following a thorough examination of the alter-globalization movement, its genealogy and the main ideational currents within the movement, the author concludes, that a “new” or “post-ideological” anarchism does not offer important innovations only on the level of political praxis, but also on the level of theoretical paradigms. In the last part of the article, the author affirms these findings with an outline of redefinition of violence, political power, nation state and democracy within (contemporary) anarchism.

How Not to Be Governed: Readings and Interpretations from a Critical Anarchist Left, 2011

What follows is a two-pronged critique of some prevailing currents and tendencies within contemporary anarchism-one which takes aim at both the rationalist, Enlightenment underpinnings of some contemporary anarchisms as well as the Eurocentrism and racism that frequently result from these-but I hope that the implications of this critique will exceed its object. While the first opens us up toward the relationship between anarchism and poststructu ralism, we will instead approach the question of the Enlightenment though the "mythical" syndicalism of Georges Sorel. The second opens us toward a process of decolonizing anarchism, which I discuss through black revolution ary Frantz Fanon, and which in turn involves the confrontation with and destruction of a dangerous "anarchist imperialism" that threatens to draw us into dubious alliances and erase truly radical antistate voices and practices. In both gestures, moreover, it is not only the limitations of the Enlightenment that are surpassed, but equally those of the poststructuralist critique thereof.

Contemporary Anarchism as an Alternative to the Dominant Narrative about the Western World

The subject of this article is anarchism interpreted as a form of opposition and an alternative to the dominant narrative about the contemporary Western world. The aim of the article is to indicate the areas that shape the dominant narrative about the world and the methods and arguments used by anarchists in attempts to disrupt this narrative by creating their own narrative. The author formulated a hypothesis according to which European anarchism defined the idea of freedom in opposition to the concept of freedom inherent in liberal democracy and consumerism, redefined democracy, criticized the tendencies inherent in modern politics, such as European integration and militarism, as well as the spread of economic patterns inherent in neoliberalism and materialistic and consumerist attitudes of modern societies. The method used to verify this hypothesis is an aspectual analysis carried out in the context of the above mentioned problems on the basis of program documents, propaganda texts and journalism of the contemporary anarchist movement in Europe.

Without borders: reflections on anarchism in Latin America

The complex history of global anarchism is currently undergoing a thorough historical revision. Inspired by the worldwide resurgence of anarchist ideas, methods of struggle, and movements that accompanied the ascendance of neoliberalism and globalized capital, and the collapse of international communism in the 1990s, scholars have recently embarked on a re-examination of classical anarchism (1860s-1920s) from a transnational perspective. This new historiography of anarchism eschews the standard nation-state centered approach and its concomitant interpretation of nationally self-contained anarchist movements. Taking anarchism's principle of internationalism seriously, it focuses instead on supranational and multidirectional flows of ideas, discourses, resources, and activists, and formal and informal organizational and personal connections and interactions. In doing so, it offers a more nuanced historical narrative of anarchist networks, organization, ideological formation, solidarities, spaces, and temporalities. Much of this current literature, however, has been based primarily in a European territorial context. 1 Still, there is reason to be optimistic about a more comprehensive treatment of the history of anarchism. Renewed interest in anarchism's anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles has resulted in several important historical studies that encompass the Global South. 2 Nevertheless, considerable work remains to be done on the dissemination and reception of anarchism in the Global South during the first globalization (1880s-1920s), as carl Levy recently stressed in an incisive literature review. 3 The articles in this special issue significantly contribute to rethinking the history of anarchism in Latin America and the Global South.
