A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF EDGAR ALLAN POE'S THE BLACK CAT

The element that makes the poem beautiful is a figure of speech. There are many types of figures of speech, for instance, metaphor, personification, irony, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and assonance. The researcher chooses Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Bells” to identify because the poem “The Bells” has not many often identified by using figures of speech. This research aimed to identify figures of speech and to find out the possible message that Edgar Allan Poe tries to convey in the poem. This research used qualitative and quantitative methods. The data and source of data took from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Bells”. This poem has (29%) figures of speech is Metaphor, (27%) is Alliteration, (22%) Onomatopoeia, (11%) is Assonance, (9%) is Personification and (2%) is Irony. But only some figures of speech become the power in this poem. For instance, in researcher result, the power of figures of speech in the poem “The Bells” is Metaphor and Alliteration.

Edgar Allan Poe's life was plagued by melancholy and disaster, which is evident in all of his writings. Among the many other poets of his generation, his solitude and individuality set him apart from the rest. He gave the Gothic genre a completely new meaning, making it both dark and significant at the same time. First, as an overview is given, of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe, and the tragedies that influenced his poetry. This study employs a comprehensive methodology focusing on the close reading of three of Poe's wellknown poems: "The Raven," "A Dream within a Dream," and "Alone." By analyzing how sadness and sorrow are portrayed in these poems, the paper investigates the extent to which these emotions impacted Poe's writing. The analytical approach involves delving into the thematic and stylistic nuances of the selected poems, shedding light on the intricate ways in which Poe articulates his emotions. The purpose of this study is to tackle the sense of gloominess and sadness by employing textual and analytical approaches. The significance of the feelings of loss and sorrow in Poe's writings is addressed, drawing connections to Poe's life story. The findings demonstrate that Poe's writings occasionally converge with personal catastrophes, tragedies from his own life, and stories about death sadness, and grief come together on multiple occasions over the course of his demanding career. Concluding that sadness, sorrow, and everything that comes with it were indeed lurking in every one of his statements, this paper contributes to the existing literature by portraying the semi-autobiographical image of the author within the realm of his poetry. The textual and analytical approaches used in this study provide a nuanced understanding of how personal experiences influenced Poe's poetic expression, enriching our comprehension of the intricate relationship between his life and art.

is well known writer in the history of literature due to being bestowed with the unique type of stories and novels. Horror, demise, fester, madness, lunacy and awfulness are the most common features of his work. Similarly, Gothicism is an important movement of Sweden that remained active for long duration of time. Furthermore, demise, madness and haunting places are also the major attributes of the Gothicism. Therefore, it can be observed that work of EAP is spell bound by the major features of Gothicism. Various stories and novels including-Ligea‖,-The Cask of Amontillado‖,-Tell Tale Heart‖ and-The Fall of the House of Usher‖ are the perfect examples for proving the fact that work of EAP embellished with gothic features. However, very literature is available for highlighting this important scenario of literature and needs a detailed analysis for enlightening the spell bound work of EAP by Gothicism. Thus, present research covers these entire research gaps and is a source of opening a window for new researchers to work in the light of above explained theme of work. In the light of results obtained by qualitative analysis, it can be concluded that our hypothesis that work of EAP is spell bound by the Gothicism is quite significantly true supported by the context citation of the above explained short stories and novels.

The following discussion’s aim is to shed light on how Edgar Allan Poe demonstrated an ebb and flow action between illusion and reality by the help of the implementations of two items which are the superstitions that dealt with the adverse belief on black cats and moral insanity conditions that are particularly specified as the spirit of perverseness. The present essay focuses on the grotesque elements in Edgar Allan Poe's the "Black Cat" and Horace Scudder's "The White Cat". Poe's story is highly embedded with a lot of grotesque elements from the beginning to the end. These elements were presented through strange characters, mysterious happenings, and degradation through death. Poe represents the struggle between the supernatural and the natural which he reinforces through the narrator who struggles to commit wrongdoings. Even in the mist of trying to restrict himself, the narrator still does not know what he did. In "The White Cat," Scudder employs grotesque elements as well but his application is subtly done unlike Poe whose application is more pronounced. The underlying meaning of this short story is on the spell of enchantment. However, Scudder, like Poe, displays the supernatural events through the characters of the "fairies" who has magical power to change the once a beautiful princess to a white cat. Grotesque includes absurd and bizarre elements and pierces the conventional version of reality. However, in its ability to shock or offend, grotesque helps to expose the vulnerability in human depicted via these absurd elements which will be explained in details in the present study.

This paper argues that Edgar Allan Poe applies many linguistic techniques in his short story "The TellTale Heart" in order to express the dilemma of a character caught up in the trap of a confused identity, lost subjectivity, and uncontrolled performances. Poe's story is analyzed in detail to examine the psychology of the performed actions. We analyze some aspects of clause construction, paying attention to 'who is doing what to whom.' This analysis is twofold: defining clause construction and discussing why this analysis is relevant and why Poe's story was chosen for this kind of analysis. In addition, we prove through the grammatical and linguistic choices made by Poe the madness and the instability of the main character in the story. We will be selective in choosing the lines to be discussed, as we focus on the lines that show the main character's detachment from himself and the rational world he belongs to. The language Poe uses in describing the mad act of killing the old man is highly committed to the psychology and ideology of the text along with its complexities in defining why a man would do what the narrator did.

Literary works are frequently used to express human expression through words, making literary works one of the unique mediums to express these expressions. The uniqueness lies within the language used to construct the story itself. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the factors that make a literary work great through formalism and defamiliarization theory, furthermore uncovering the impact of the factors on the story. Using a qualitative research method specifically close reading, this study describes how the strength of a short story The Tell-Tale Heart written by Edgar Allan Poe according to both formalism and defamiliarization theory can contribute to the construction of the story. The construction of the story relies on its tension which is delivered through the use of its imageries, form/structure, parallelism, etc. It can be concluded that the possession of the formalism elements helps the story to shape its nuance and its atmospheric storytelling

This article aims at explicating Poe's Raven using a psycho-linguistic perspective. This study is a serious attempt to delve into the psyche of Poe as an extremely important 19 th century American poet, who may rightfully be considered as " America's Shakespeare ". The critical analysis of this poem relies primarily on an approach that combines psychology and linguistics in the explication process. It takes in consideration the psychological and emotional state of Poe as well as the linguistic style employed in the poem. The study shows how the reader's reception and response to the poem could easily change after considering the psycho-linguistic factors present in the poem. Specifically, the Raven appears to symbolize loneliness, sadness, and the feeling of going insane coupled with a sense of uncertainty even about one's own self. This is clearly illustrated by the ability to hear sounds and experience smells without being able to deal with one's own thoughts, which inevitably amounts to nothing less than self-torture. Poe's own personal state of mind and psychological conditions seem to have helped him in composing this poem. Upon first reading of the poem, the reader may initially feel a sense of fear. However, the reader could upon subsequent readings arrive at a better understanding of the semantic connotations of the poem. A close and careful psycho-linguistic explication of The Raven helps the reader explore the deep and figurative layers of meaning contained within the lines of verse. The more we understand Poe's psyche; the better interpretation we will have of the poem itself. This could result in a substantial change on the part of the reader regarding his or her own feelings about the poem. Subsequently, feelings of loneliness and fear could easily turn into feelings of enjoyment of the poem and all that it represents. This clearly shows that the application of the psychological approach of literary criticism along with the linguistic discourse analysis help the reader delve into the denotative and figurative meanings and subsequently appreciate the poem and accept it at its own merits. It is certainly hoped that this study will make a substantial contribution to the already existing body of literature attempting to figure out the numerous layers of meaning embedded within the lines of this monumental poem.

The research aims to examine the melancholy as reflected in Edgar Allan Poe’s two short stories entitled The Oblong Box and The Fall of The House of Usher through the figurative language and its significance. The objective of the research are: 1) to describe the style or figurative language in the short stories, and 2) to analyze how Poe utilized the style in order to express melancholy. The research belongs to the descriptive qualitative research. The reserch uses Stylistic approach and the concept of melancholy by Markus Treichler (2008). The data are collected through the technique of close reading in order to see each word, phrase, and sentence from the short stories.
