| John Emlyn Emlyn-Jones, MP for Dorset North 1922-1924 | |||||
| Emlyn-Jones, together with his wife and 36 others, was killed in a plane crash in France | |||||
| on 3 March 1952. According to a report in 'The Times' on 4 March 1952:- | |||||
| 'The airliner was a Languedoc, a four-engined aircraft of French design. It left [Nice] at | |||||
| 9 a.m., but, according to some observers, seemed to have difficulty in taking off from the | |||||
| runway and gaining height. A few minutes afterwards the port engines appear to have given | |||||
| trouble, and the aircraft was seen returning to the airfield and lowering its under-carriage | |||||
| as if to land. At the same time smoke was seen trailing from one of the engines. | |||||
| 'What followed is not clear, but it seems that one wing struck an olive tree on the side of a | |||||
| hill about three miles from Nice. The aircraft overturned and burst into flames. | |||||
| 'The aircraft was completely wrecked, debris being strewn over the field where the crash | |||||
| occurred.' | |||||
| Henry Richard Farquharson, MP for Dorset West 1885-1895 | |||||
| At the general election held in 1892, Farquharson's unsuccessful opponent was Charles | |||||
| Tindall Gatty. Following the election, Gatty sued Farquharson for alleged libel and slander. | |||||
| The following report is taken from the 'Manchester Times' of 23 June 1893:- | |||||
| 'In the Queen's Bench Division, on Monday, the further hearing of the case of Gatty v | |||||
| Farquharson was resumed before the Lord Chief Justice and a special jury. The plaintiff, | |||||
| Mr. Charles Tindall Gatty, the son of a well-known Yorkshire clergyman, and the | |||||
| unsuccessful candidate at the last general election for West Dorset, sought to recover | |||||
| damages from the defendant, Mr. Henry Richard Farquharson, the sitting member for that | |||||
| division, for alleged libel and slander. The plaintiff complained that in March, 1892, the | |||||
| defendant told Mr. St.John Brodrick in the House of Commons that the plaintiff had been | |||||
| expelled from the Charterhouse School or compelled to leave by reason of an unnatural | |||||
| offence. In placards and speeches he managed to suggest some terrible charge. The | |||||
| defendant denied the alleged statement to Mr. Brodrick, and pleaded privilege as to the | |||||
| alleged libels. | |||||
| 'Amongst the witnesses called was Dr. Haig Brown, who said that he had been head master | |||||
| of the Charterhouse for many years. Mr. Gatty left the Charterhouse in July, 1855. He was | |||||
| removed by the head master for an offence against purity. | |||||
| 'Cross-examined by Mr. Lockwood: Mr. Gatty was then a boy of 13. There was a boy at the | |||||
| school then named Lyne, a brother of Mr. Lyne, later known as Father Ignatius, and then | |||||
| Brother Ignatius. Young Gatty had applied to Brother Ignatius, as he was in difficulty, and | |||||
| made a statement to him. Brother Ignatius communicated with witness, who wrote to | |||||
| Gatty's father, and the boy was taken away. He was not expelled. Witness might have said | |||||
| in conversation with Gatty at the United University Club in May last that he was taken away | |||||
| as much for protection as for punishment. | |||||
| 'Mr. Henry Richard Farquharson, examined by Mr. Winch, Q.C., said he was defendant in the | |||||
| action and member for West Dorset. Previous to the last contest he did not know Mr. Gatty. | |||||
| He had heard a rumour from an old Charterhouse boy in the constituency. | |||||
| 'Examined by Mr. Lockwood, the defendant said it was some time after his Bedminster | |||||
| speech, in which he referred to Mr. Gatty's old school fellows, that he had a conversation | |||||
| with Mr. St.John Brodrick at the House of Commons. Mr. Brodrick's statement of the | |||||
| conversation agreed substantially with what witness remembered. He did not say anything | |||||
| about Mr. Gatty leaving Yeovil on account of some matter in connection with printers' boys. | |||||
| He swore that he never said anything of the sort. | |||||
| 'On resuming on Tuesday morning Mr. Lockwood said he wished to ask Mr. Gatty a question | |||||
| about Yeovil which he had omitted to put on Monday. Mr. Gatty then went into the witness | |||||
| box. | |||||
| 'Mr. Lockwood: Were there any scandals of any sort or kind connected with your stay at | |||||
| Yeovil? - None whatever. [Lockwood] I believe you had a farewell dinner when you left, and | |||||
| also a presentation from the staff of the paper on which you were engaged? - That was so. | |||||
| 'Sir Edward Clarke then addressed the jury on behalf of the defendant, and reviewed the | |||||
| circumstances of the utterances of the alleged libels and the evidence in the case at great | |||||
| length. | |||||
| ''Mr. Lockwood then addressed the jury on behalf of the plaintiff. | |||||
| 'His Lordship, in summing up the case to the jury, explained the legal definitions of libel and | |||||
| slander. He said that a person who went in for politics must expect to get hard knocks, but | |||||
| he had the right to have his personal character respected. It seemed to him (the learned | |||||
| judge) that to rake out an incident in a young boy's life was unquestionably discreditable. | |||||
| 'The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, £5,000 damages. His Lordship gave judgment | |||||
| in accordance with the verdict.' | |||||
