Bosch is back as Amazon plans a new spinoff in the iconic franchise spearheaded by Titus Welliver. The original Bosch series ran for seven seasons on Prime Video before later being extended with Bosh: Legacy, which went on to run for three seasons before concluding earlier this year. Prime went on to produce Ballard, a spinoff series centered on Maggie Q's character Renee Ballard.
Now, the iconic detective is getting a new series at MGM+ called Bosch: Start of Watch and it will cover the early years of the detective's career. Cameron Monaghan will take on the role of Bosch, with Omari Hardwick also set to star. Hardwick will star as veteran officer Eli Birdges. Filming will begin at some point in 2026 in Los Angeles.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said of the series:
We are thrilled to expand the Bosch universe with this compelling origin story that showcases how one of television’s most beloved detectives became the man we know today. With Cameron Monaghan and Omari Hardwick bringing these complex characters to life, and the creative vision of Michael Connelly and our talented executive producers, Bosch: Start of Watch promises to deliver the gritty, authentic storytelling that honors the franchise’s legacy while opening an exciting new chapter.
The series, which will take place in 1991, also received an official logline:
The series will explore a city on the edge, teeming with racial tension, gang violence, and a fractured LAPD. Amid routine calls and growing unrest, Bosch finds himself drawn into a high-profile heist and a web of criminal corruption that will test his loyalty to the badge and shape his future as the detective who lives by the code, ‘Everybody counts or nobody counts.'
Despite canceling the original series and its sequel, Prime is clearly interested in staying in the Bosch business. Ballard just scored a season 2 renewal, extending Q's own arm of the franchise, where Welliver still has the opportunity to appear. With Start of Watch, though, Prime is reaching into the past for its latest iteration, exploring the origins of the beloved character and giving audiences a new perspective on him.
It follows a similar play from another hit detective series. CBS's long-running NCIS franchise has expanded in recent years with shows like NCIS: Origins, centered on the early years of Mark Harmon's Gibbs, and Tony & Ziva, an international spinoff based on two characters from the core NCIS team.
Though the flagship series has long ended, Bosch is far from dead and more spinoffs could come in the future, especially if Start of Watch proves to be successful. By all accounts, it seems likely that it will be. Given Ballard's success and the enduring love of all things Bosch, Prime Video clearly wants to continue exploring this world.
With a production start date sometime in 2026, Start of Watch likely won't debut until the latter half of the year. There's no word on when Ballard could return, but a double dose of Bosch next year certainly seems likely.
