Description

Y 'l'elermnrdam K 'f Y. lnlllesline ll'nlller.
PATENT-ED DEC 3l i867 I geiten tetreatwt @ffice PETER RIORDAN, OF WASHING'ION, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA. Lettere Patent No. 72,908. dated December 31, 1867.
`IMPROVED CLOTHES-LINE HOLDER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PETER RIORDAN, ofthe city and county of Washington, and District of Columbia, have linvented a new and' improved Clothes-Line Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same. reference beiner had to' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication, and in which- Figure 1 is'a side view of my invention, and
Figure 2 is an .edge view ofthe same.
In this invention a neat, cheap, and simple apparatus is 'eniployed,.by ineans of which the clothes-line can ber readily fastened andvunfastened, or tightened and loosened, with the use of one hand, and without tying a. knot. In the drawings, A represents a plate or frame, ofthe form and dimensions shown in the drawings, in which the anges'B B' are foxntbeY purpose of fastening the plate` to litssupport, the lower one being the longer, in order to give the frame a certain degree of inclination from the supporting-wall, whereby the line can be more easily` introduced beneath the clamp than if theframe were perpendicular, R is a reel or spoolwhich may be flrmly fixed to the frame, as shown, or may be supported by a spindle, or on ajournal, so as to revolve freely around its vcrticaiaxis.' C is a clamp, consisting of a block, of the form shown in the drawings, pivoted at c, and provided :1t-one endwith a bevelled and corrugated surface, e, and at the other end with a weight, e'. The frame A has an ear, a, which extends down, so that when the block or clamp C is in a'horizontal position, asvshown in fg. 1, the corrugated surfacee of the clamp will cover the lower part of the ear a. The surface of the ear is bevelled oi, so as to be parallel to the inclined o r bevelled surface e, and is similarly corrugated. The upper corner of the frame A at a', in a lino between the Aspool R and the ear a, is rounded 0`, to prevent cutting or wearing the line. 'lhe corrugations on both the clamp and ear are arranged in a circular position'.
When in operation, the line is passed around the spool R, and its end passed down over the face of the frame, and inserted between the corrugated or bevelled surfacese and a'. The weighted clamp C prevents it from being withdrawn in the direction of the spool, after being once inserted between e and a. Tho corrugations on the clamp assist the weight in operating it, and also prevent the ropefrom slipping.
The operation of the device is exceedingly simple, and can be easily ee'cted with one hand, requiring but a moments time. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The device above described, consisting of the frameA, clamp C, and spool R, when combined, constructed,
and operating substantially in the manner as and for the purpose speciied.
' PETER RIORDAN.
