In a chair having a back-rest 16 pivoted to the seat 14 and to an arm-rest 19 the forward end of which can be located in different positions on the chair frame 12, 13 to adjust the angle of the backrest, a recess 21 on the underside of the arm-rest is closed by a plate 22 having a slot 23 having enlarged parts 24, the latter receiving a peg 25 on the frame, peg 25 having a neck 26 slidable in the narrower parts of slot 23 when the arm-rest is lifted slightly.
