Abstract
778,505. Rotors for electric motors. JONES & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., W., and MERRILL, F. W. Jan. 5, 1956, No. 476/56. Class 35. In an induction starting synchronous motor the shaft does not pass through the permanent magnet but the drive is transmitted to the shaft directly from a squirrel cage on the rotor. The magnet 2 may have inwardly curved sides (Fig. 4) with non-magnetic metal 10 between the magnet and the annular laminµ 1 which are slotted to receive squirrel cage bars which may be cast in situ integrally with end rings 8 each of which grips a stub shaft. The cage, which may be of aluminium, may alternatively be built up of rods and end rings, the latter having parts welded or otherwise secured to stub shafts. To maintain the sections of the magnet parallel to the shaft more uniform in spite of the curved sides, the ends of the magnet may be extended in conical form as shown in Fig. 5. The magnet could have straight sides or be four polar.
