Abstract
Energisation of a relay coil 13 causes closure of contacts 4 whereby a flasher unit 14 provides an intermittent output at terminal 9, which may be connected to vehicle lights. The relay may also have normally-closed contacts 5 providing a continuous output at terminal 9 when the coil 13 is not energised. <IMAGE>
Description
RELAY-CONTROLLED ELECTRICAL FLASHER UNIT
This invention relates to an electrical flasher unit1 the operation of which is controlled by an electrical relay switch.
An electrical flasher unit is a well-known device which comprises a circuit-breaker and electrical connectors. When a current is applied through the connectors the circuit breaker will, after a short period of time, break the circuit and so stop the current flowing. After a further short period of time the circuit is restored and current will flow again.
Electrical flasher units are commonly used in motor vehicles to control the operation of trafficator (turn signal) lights.
An electrical relay switch is a well-known device which comprises an electro-magnetic solenoid and electrical connectors. When a current is applied through the connectors to the solenoid, other connectors are electrically joined or broken as required, so other circuits can be made or broken.
Electric circuits containing flasher units are normally controlled by a manually operated electric switch. However, this method cannot always provide the required control to one or more electric circuits.
The present invention combines the essential features of both electrical flasher unit and electrical relay switch in such a way that when current from one electric circuit is applied to the solenoid, a different electric circuit containing a flasher unit type circuit breaker is made, and optionally a circuit without a flasher unit type circuit breaker is broken.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the relay-controlled flasher unit mounted on a baseboard and with wiring shown;
Figure 2 is the electrical circuit diagram.
Referring to the drawing the relay-controlled electrical flasher unit comprises a baseboard 15 upon which the relay 13 and the electrical flasher unit 14 are mounted as shown in
Fig 1. Suitable electrical wire 16 is used to make the required connections indicated in the circuit diagram Fig 2.
The operation of the unit is as follows:
If there is no current flowing through terminals 7 and 8, the unit allows current to flow through terminals 6 and 9 without interruption. However, when current is applied through terminals 7 and 8 the relay 13 is activated and the flasher unit 14 is brought into the circuit between terminals 6 and 9.
When current through terminals 7 and 8 is reduced below the level required to keep the relay activated, the flasher unit is switched out of circuit and the complete unit returns to its original state.
