Low-cost Gent type sampler constructed for urban atmospheric aerosol sampling
Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2021

The construction of the sampler was carried out by combining low-cost materials with good mechanical strength (such as nylon 6.0), hydraulic piping PVC, and the use of a 3D printer. The innovation of the present work is the employment of a 3D printer using ABS polymer to create the grids that cannot be machined. In addition to the sampler, the system is composed of a vacuum pump, a gas meter, and a rotameter. The total cost of the sampling system amounted at about 1200 USD, and the cost of the manufactured Gent type sampler did not reach 100 USD. The results obtained while using this set for sampling atmospheric aerosol for a period of 11 months were compared with the mass concentration of PM10 obtained from the official environmental company, CETESB of São Paulo State, Brazil, showing good correlation with those from CETESB — which confirmed its effectiveness and suitability for use. The low cost, easy operation, and versatility of the built Gent type sampler enable its use for scientific and academic purposes. The equipment can be useful in environmental monitoring networks, in low-income regions, and as an instrument for environmental education used in universities.

Particulate matter is a pollutant of great concern making its chemical and morpho-structural characterization of enormous importance. The present work aims at the characterization of atmospheric PM 10 and PM 2.5 . Data of the aerosol mass concentration was correlated by multivariate analysis with water-soluble ion fraction composition accessed by ion chromatography (IC), as well as with meteorological information and air mass backward trajectories. The gravimetric analysis presented average values 3 to 4 times higher than the guide values recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). A morpho-structural analysis by SEM/FEG coupled to EDS was also carried out identifying the coarse fraction elements from minerals and from soil resuspension organic spherical particles that originated from combustion processes as well as Ti, associated with long-distance transportation. In the fine fraction, Zn with origin probably in tires and vehicle brakes was found. These origins were confirmed by the air masses' backward trajectories obtained by the HYSPLIT model (NOAA). This study contributes to a better understanding of the complex composition of the particulate material in the atmosphere of Araraquara City, resulting from the combination of local and long-distance sources, and serves as a basis for the comparison with future studies related to the air quality at this and other regions in Brazil and in the world.

TG-DTA curves of Bco_dried suggested the presence of kaolinite, muscovite and hydrotalcite by the different events of structural water loss at different atmospheres. The interaction of Ag-clay might have occurred with hydrotalcite as can be inferred by the disappearance of the event at 408.9 °C (N 2 ) and 433.4 °C (air). FTIR spectra showed that the modification occurred because of the changes that can be observed in the band range of (750 ≤ ν ≤ 1350) cm -1 for inner -OH and Si-O bonds. The Bco_dried composition was quantified by XRD and Rietveld refinement, and crystalline phases are quartz, calcite, kaolinite, hydrotalcite, muscovite, and portlandite. After sintering, the material presented the formation of new crystalline phases, due to the loss of structural water. When modified, the sample had no characteristic peaks of hydrotalcite, suggesting an interaction with Ag species. The compositions estimated for all samples by WD-XRF are mostly of Si, Al, Ca, K, Mg, Fe, Ti, and Ag. After modification, Ag increased significantly for Pca4_dried and Pca4_sint. SEM images presented the hexagonal characteristic of layered clay material and showed the interaction with Ag added. The susceptibility test showed that Pca4_dried has an antibacterial capacity against E. coli JM107 strains. The oxides were formed in a Hg(I)-containing solution. The SEM images, XPS spectra and CV obtained after the RCV treatment showed a more attacked surface with less mercury on the Ir. On the contrary, the SEM images, XPS spectra and the CV for the electrode prepared by CPE indicated a less attacked surface with more Hg. The oxides formed when the CPE condition was applied inhibited the UPD of mercury.

Thermogravimetry (TG) applied to the study of the reaction of mercury with platinum–rhodium alloy
Thermochimica Acta, 2002
Thermogravimetry (TG) energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (... more Thermogravimetry (TG) energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mapping surface, X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy and atomic spectroscopy with cold vapor generation have been used to study the reaction of mercury with platinum–rhodium (Pt–Rh) alloy. The results suggest that, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt–Rh to form intermetallic compounds of different stability, when heated indicated by at least four weight loss steps. Intermetallic compounds as PtHg4 and PtHg2 was characterized by XRD. These intermetallic compound are the main product presents on the surface of the samples after remotion of the bulk mercury via thermal desorption techniques.

Thermogravimetry (TG), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy ... more Thermogravimetry (TG), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mapping surface and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for the study of solid-state reaction on Pt-15%Rh with electrodeposited mercury. The results suggest when heated the mercury film react with the Pt-15%Rh alloy to form intermetallics having different thermal stabilities indicated by three mass loss steps. The first mass loss step occurs between room temperature and 184 • C only the bulk Hg is removed and PtHg 4 , PtHg 2 and RhHg 2 were characterized by XRD. The second step, between 184 and 271 • C, was attributed to PtHg 4 decomposition with formation of PtHg 2 stabilized by RhHg 2 . The third step, between 271 and 340 • C, was attributed to decomposition of a solid-solution of PtHg 2 /RhHg 2 . The fourth step, between 340 and 600 • C, was ascribed to: (1) a thermal decomposition of PtHg 2 , formed by a PtHg eutectoid reaction (∼340 • C) on the surface and (2) Hg removal from a solid solution of Pt-15%Rh(Hg).

The total proteins were extracted and the isolates obtained by isoelectric precipitation presented similar DSC curves, concordant with the results obtained by gel filtration chromatography and electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel (PAGE-SDS). However, the DSC curves showed a higher enthalpy with regard to the denaturing protein isolate (PI) extracted at pH 10.0 when compared to a PI at pH 11.5. Such results are in accordance with those obtained for PI extracted at pH 10.0 using chromatography, this one being present in the form of molecular aggregates of greater molecular mass. The glutelin fraction, however, did not present a denaturation peak in the DSC curve, showing that the process for obtaining the same significantly altered its conformation.
