I've been trying to install Void using the live image, a special kind of installation, I made many mistakes, and it's been a major struggle because the live image is just too minimal. My experience would have been a lot better if I could boot up and start with a shell that has tab completion and readline/command history.
There is currently none so I had to install one every time I booted (I had to boot from the live image many times), and then I ran into another obstacle:
xbps-install -S
Bad choice for a command name. 'xbps-install' is not very short and comfortable. Typing that so many times contributed to my pain. Anyway, it updates the repository information. Then:
xbps-install -y fish-shell nano openssh
Ah, no. I am told that I need to run 'xbps-install -u xbps' first.
Well, if it's compulsory, if the thing is really going to refuse to work without it, then why not just make it automatic?
Then I have to open /etc/ssh/sshd and edit it so it can actually do the job it is supposed to do.
Imagine doing that a dozen times. Very, very tiresome.
"Ah, but it has to be really minimal because we're all using 386s with 40MB of disk and dial-up internet."
Well, then I suggest a package for that, let's say an "operator's kit," but not really a package, rather a 'more-tools' or 'better-shell' command that will somehow download and install the kit, containing:
It would be a nice touch if it could prompt for a choice of keyboard layout on a list.
That's it. Thank you for reading.
