Why SelahOS exists.

Most operating systems are built for hardware cycles, enterprise workflows, or generalized computing. They interrupt. They distract. They demand attention at the worst possible moments.

SelahOS was built around a different premise: that the space between an idea and its execution should be as frictionless as possible. That your tools should create space for you — not consume it.

The name comes from a Hebrew word found throughout the ancient Psalms. Selah. It means: pause, reflect, consider. We built an operating system around that idea.

A creator-first Linux distribution focused on calm workflows, hardware longevity, and reducing the distance between thought and creation.

"Older machines still deserve usefulness, dignity, and creative possibility."
SelahOS Design Principle

Built around what creators actually need.

Creator-First

Reduce friction between thought and execution. Every default, every setting, every included application chosen with the creator in mind.

Hardware Longevity

Machines from 2010 to 2026 are welcome here. A computer that still runs deserves software that still supports it.

Calm Computing

Minimal notifications. Thoughtful defaults. A desktop environment tuned for focus rather than stimulation or distraction.

Local-First Future

Privacy-respecting AI tools, offline-capable workflows, and creative infrastructure that belongs to you — not a subscription service.

See it in motion.

Active Beta Development

We believe in transparency. SelahOS v1.0-beta is real, functional, and under active development — but it is a beta. Here is an honest picture of where things stand.

  • ISO boots to KDE Plasma 6 live desktop
  • SelahBridge — Windows app compatibility layer
  • Full creator software stack (Ardour, Blender, GIMP, OBS)
  • Custom SelahOS graphical installer UI
  • PipeWire audio — low latency, JACK compatible
  • Installer backend — WiFi dependency, stabilizing
  • Hardware compatibility — expanding support
  • Muse AI Companion — infrastructure ready, model pending
  • SelahVault encrypted containers — planned V1.0 GA
  • Ground tier (2-4GB RAM machines) — V1.1

A note on honesty.

Many software projects overstate readiness. We won't do that.

SelahOS beta is for technically curious early adopters who understand that beta means exactly that. If you need a production-stable daily driver today, wait for V1.0 GA.

If you want to be part of building something meaningful from the beginning — you're in the right place.

We are building in public, with honesty, toward something we believe creators genuinely deserve.

Known Issues

We document every known issue before each release. These are the active items in v1.0-beta. Nothing hidden.

  • Active Installer requires active internet connection The installation backend fetches packages and keyring updates live. Offline install is not yet supported.
  • Active Mirror sync failures on some networks Slow or restricted connections may cause archinstall to timeout during package mirror selection. A retry usually resolves it.
  • Minor NVIDIA proprietary drivers not pre-installed Nouveau is active by default. Post-install instructions for NVIDIA are included in the welcome documentation.
  • Known Secure Boot must be disabled in UEFI firmware SelahOS does not currently ship with signed bootloader keys. This is expected for beta; a signed release is planned for GA.
  • Known Ventoy is not supported Use dd to write the ISO. Ventoy's copy-on-read method causes boot failures with this image.

Why this matters.

I'm a musician, producer, and builder. For most of my life, computing felt designed for someone else — enterprise users, power gamers, developers with expensive hardware. Not for people who create.

I've watched friends abandon projects because their machines "couldn't keep up." I've seen studios thrown out because the software demanded hardware the artist couldn't afford. I've felt that ceiling myself — the moment where the tool stops serving you and starts costing you.

"What I remember most about the moments in computing that moved me — was the feeling of being welcomed. Not just given a tool, but invited into something."

That's what SelahOS is built to be. An invitation. An operating system that looks at your older machine and says: you still belong here. An environment that looks at your workflow and says: I'll get out of your way.

We are building something we believe creators genuinely deserve — quietly, deliberately, without asking for your constant attention. Your music matters. Your designs matter. Your ideas matter. The technology should serve you.

Technology should create space for human creativity, not consume it.

If SelahOS resonates with you.

SelahOS is being built by one person, in spare hours, with a clear vision and a lot of coffee. There are no investors. No corporate backing. No roadmap driven by someone else's priorities.

Every contribution — large or small — goes directly into development time, hardware for testing, and keeping the lights on at Selah Technologies.

This is entirely optional. SelahOS will always be free and open. But if this project means something to you, and you want to help it keep going, I'm genuinely grateful.
