Originally
conceived by Tsar Peter the Great as an award for bravery, the Order of St.
Alexander Nevsky was first awarded in 1725 by his widow, Empress Catherine I.
The statutes of the Order were promulgated during the reign of Tsar Paul I,
which stated that the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky was to be awarded to
high-ranking officials, both Civil and Military, who distinguished themselves
in their service to Russia.
The Order was third in seniority behind the Order of Saint
Andrew and the Order of St. Catherine and initially awarded in one
class and two divisions: Civil, without swords; and Military, with swords.
For exceptional service, at the
monarch's sole discretion, the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky could be awarded
with the Imperial crown or with diamonds.
Non-Christian versions of the Badge and Star bore Imperial
Eagle at their centre.
All of the following are available for special
