On April 9, 2025, the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSLC), successfully secured approval from the UNESCO Office in East Asia for its proposal titled “Design and Delivery of Mapping Open Science Infrastructure and Interoperability Practices in East Asia.” The project, led by Director Liu Xiwen, was submitted in response to a UNESCO call for proposals.
The project aims to comprehensively map the current status of Open Science Infrastructure (OSI) in East Asia, assess regional interoperability practices, and propose best pathways for multilingual metadata processing, in support of broader scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing. In preparing the proposal, NSLC worked closely with domestic partners—including Zhejiang University, the United Nations Consultative Committee on Open Science of the China Association for Science and Technology, and Guangxi University of Science and Technology—as well as with experts and institutions from Japan, South Korea, and beyond, to refine the research framework and implementation plan in alignment with UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science and the UN Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (2024–2033).
The successful approval of this project marks a significant milestone in strengthening NSLC's capabilities in open science research and practice. It is of strategic importance to China's efforts to participate in global open science governance and to implement its policy goals for a shared open science information infrastructure network.
